Constitution Hill could head to Kempton if Windsor proves too firm

Connections of Constitution Hill are keeping the Group Three William Hill September Stakes at Kempton as a contingency should the ground at Windsor be judged unsuitable for his planned return to the Flat at the end of August.

The Nicky Henderson-trained star had been entered for the Listed Weatherbys August Stakes at Windsor on August 29, which would have been his third start on the level. With an extended dry spell and little sign of substantial rainfall in the immediate forecast, his team are monitoring the turf and have the Kempton meeting the following weekend in mind as an alternative.

Flexible planning around ground and timing

Henderson has stressed that the September Stakes offers a straightforward backup that would not disrupt the horse’s preparation. An extra week between runs is not expected to be an issue and would allow the stable to react to the state of the Windsor surface should conditions remain very dry.

The August Stakes at Windsor is run on a watered course, which could make it a viable option even after short periods without rain, but Kempton sits on a different surface and presents a reliable Plan B if turf at Windsor becomes too firm for the team’s liking.

Kempton record and Flat credentials

Constitution Hill has strong associations with Kempton, having won three Christmas Hurdles there and also making his second run on the Flat at the Sunbury track earlier in the year. That occasion came after a memorable debut at Southwell, when he showed his potential on the level before following up under Ryan Moore’s ride under the floodlights at Kempton.

A start in the September Stakes would mark the Grade—or Group—company debut on the Flat for Constitution Hill. The race has been taken in recent years by accomplished performers who have gone on to Group One success, providing a useful form reference should connections opt for the Kempton route.

Implications for autumn plans

Running at Kempton would almost certainly rule out a trip to the Irish St Leger at the Curragh on September 13, a race that has been floated in planning discussions. Henderson has indicated there would be plenty of other options available after a third Flat appearance, including the prospect of handicap entries once the horse becomes eligible.

Earlier in the summer, international targets such as the Melbourne Cup had not been completely dismissed by the stable, but any immediate choice between Windsor, Kempton or Ireland will be influenced primarily by ground and timing.

Stable condition and next steps

Connections report that Constitution Hill has been working well and remains in good order as they finalise plans for his next outing. The decision between Windsor and Kempton will be taken with an eye to the horse’s welfare and the suitability of the turf at the different venues, with the team ready to delay a week if necessary to find the best race for him.

Racegoers and festival planners will be watching the weather and any official track reports closely in the coming days as Henderson’s stable makes its final call on where the high‑profile hurdling champion will return to the Flat.
